What's Included
Overarching Perspective
I share why creating night portraits is worth exploring and how it is essential to staying relevant in our industry.
Essential Gear Talk
Choosing the right gear can be overwhelming. This lesson tells you what gear you need to achieve stunning night portraits.
Strobe Light
We begin this lesson on location, using strobe lights. Follow along as I create a portrait for the Nashville musician, Trevor Toms.
Ultra Shallow Depth of Field
Shooting wide open to create ultra shallow depth of field can give a beautiful look to creating portraits. It also helps separate the subject from the background.
Cross Light
I believe Rembrandt Cross Light is one of the most beautiful and classic approaches to lighting your subject. I will show you how to achieve this classic approach with minimal effort.
Light Removal
I'll show you how to keep your light close to your subject and then use Photoshop to remove it using a mask. This technique gives you way more control over your lighting.
Top Down Strobe Light
In this session, I'll show you how to create the Top Down Lighting approach and get stunning results.
Continuous Light
One of the advantages of using continuous light at night is that you don’t need a ton of power output. Second, you are working in real-time, blending your light with the continuous light that exists in the night environment, making it very easy to build an image.
Run and Shoot
I show you how easy it is to carry minimal gear and just walk with your subject, looking for interesting environments to set a shot.
Backseat of Car
I create a cinematic look and build this image in the backseat of a car using continuous lights with colored gels.
Light Comparison
I start this portrait session using the available light from a restaurant window, then move my subject about 20 feet away to create a portrait with a Beauty Dish modifier. Then we compare the dramtic differences from these two lighting approaches.
Two Light Setup
In this session, I started out with one light and then added one additional light, an edge light coming from the back left, to highlight my subject's head and shoulder. It is a basic study of how one additional light can greatly enhance the drama of the image.
Theater Shoot
I'd always wanted to capture a person lighting a cigar in a rural street scene. When the opportunity came to shoot Nashville musician, Shannon Russell, I asked him to bring a cigar and ended up with stunning results.
Theater Retouch
I show you step-by-step how I retouched my favorite image of Shannon. I also share tips and tricks on how I finalize this image, to create my signature look.
Mercedes Driver
I take you on location to shoot Kelvin in his Mercedes. Surprisingly, this is not a technically complex image to create. The key is understanding where to place the lights.
Mercedes Driver Retouch
To finish the masterclass, I showcase my tried-and-true techniques for retouching. I'll show you how I use Photoshop and Luminar Neo to finalize my images.
