What's Included

Introduction

The goal of this masterclass is to get you excited about capturing in Black and White. We'll take a look at the history of Black and White photography and how it still impacts our industry today.

Power of Black & White

Monochromatic images are so powerful because they transport the viewer into an entirely different world. It gives people something they don't see every day. Understanding this relationship with the viewer gives us a powerful medium to work in and explore.

Tonal Range

I take you on a deep dive into what makes a great black and white image and show you how the current digital cameras and processing programs available today give us a quantum leap toward reaching the ultimate black and white image.

50% Gray Card

To successfully distribute your tones across your image, you have to understand how your camera thinks. By using a 50% gray card, we can illustrate how your camera thinks, and from there, we can place our tones on any Zone we desire.

Zone System Simplified

In this module, I break down the Zone System so that even a 3rd grader can understand it. The goal is to achieve the greatest tonal range possible in an image and retain detail in both the shadows and highlights.

Understanding Bit Depth

To understand how a digital camera works, you must look at Bit Depth. The more bit depth you have to work with, the more tones (and colors) you have to represent in your image. I cover everything you need to know.

HDR Processing

With HDR, we can take a 14-bit camera and create an actual 16-bit file. This is done by capturing at least three images: underexposed, standard, and overexposed. I'll show you how to blend these exposures in Photoshop to create one amazing black and white image.

Ultra-Dramatic

I go all-out and show you how to push the envelope when manipulating a sports subject to create an ultra-dramatic portrait.

Artistic Vision

Lastly, we look at the aesthetics or artistic process of creating a successful image. This is an excellent exercise in helping develop your vision by looking at the "Why" behind an image.
